Pre-Columbian, Colombia, Tumaco region, La Tolita, ca. 500 BCE to 300 CE. A charming pottery bowl with a round but stable base, dramatically-convex walls with a sloping shoulder, and a thin rim surrounding a deep basin. The highly-burnished vessel boasts two highly-stylized avian figures separated by a pair of vertical columns. Each bird presents with a rigid posture, broad tail feathers projecting from its posterior, stocky legs, and a proud head replete with a pointed beak and wispy feathers. Colored in earthy red and orange-brown hues, this is a fabulous example from ancient Colombia! Size: 5.875" W x 3.25" H (14.9 cm x 8.3 cm).

Minor nicks and abrasions to rim, body, and base, with light softening to some incised details, and fading to areas of pigmentation, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits and manganese blooms throughout.
