Southeast Asia, Indonesia, East Java, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden dance mask painted in dark-red pigment and accentuated with streaks of black and cream. The expressive visage presents an important character from the Topeng dance narrative called a Buta. Buta are wide-eyed demons that come forth to challenge the benevolent and are ultimately defeated to exemplify the positive qualities of heroism and bravery. This mask presents with bulging eyes above narrow eye slits, pointed eyebrows, a broad nose, and a fang-filled mouth, all beneath a leather-wrapped periphery and a coiffure of coarse locks of horsehair. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 7" W x 10.75" H (17.8 cm x 27.3 cm)

Condition
Minor nicks and abrasions to face, peripheries, and verso, with light craquelure and chipping to original pigment, and wear to some raised details on nose and brows, otherwise intact and very good. Nice traces of original pigment throughout. Strung with metal wire on verso for mounting purposes.
