**Originally Listed At $300**

Latin America, Mexico, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A pair of masks in the form of male faces skillfully hand-carved from wood and painted black. Both male faces have carved facial hair and eye slits for the wearer to see through are cut into and above the sockets. These masks may have been used in "Danza de los Moros y Cristianos" (Dance of the Moors and Christians), which reenacts the Spanish Christians versus the Muslim "Moors." Size: 9.5" L x 6.2" W (24.1 cm x 15.7 cm)

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private lifetime collection of Dr. Saul Tuttman and Dr. Gregory Siskind, New York, New York, USA, acquired in the 1980s

Smaller mask is repaired with a piece reattached and a stable break line radiating from right corner to edge. Stable pressure fissure split on the nose. Chips and abrasions to pigments on both.
