West Africa, Nigeria, Igbo peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A hand-carved wooden dance mask from the Afikpo peoples, a larger subgroup of people within the larger Igbo nation. The mask is defined by a typical narrow, ovoid form, with slit-form eyes, a crested nose, and a concentric, red-painted diamond centered on the forehead. Masks of this form are representative of a human spirit and are often used in Afikpo dance ceremonies which celebrate both life and death. Size: 5" W x 7.5" H (12.7 cm x 19 cm).
