Description
Lot of five antique cast iron fire department medallions or "firemarks," which beginning i the late 18th Century were placed on the exterior of a home to guarantee fire brigades that the house was fully insured. Date of these is unknown, though several are likely reproductions from a later era and show signs of once being hand-painted. 1792 date on two of them marks when John Nesbitt and Ebenezer Hazard met in Philadelphia's Independence Hall to create the Insurance Company of America ('I.N.A'), the company that wrote some of the first policies to cover ships, cargo, and homes.
The dimensions range from 11.25 in x 8.75 in x 0.5 in to 3 in x 2.25 in x 0.25 in. Condition is good, with some slight rust and surface wear. Please call or email for a detailed condition report.
