"CORNWALLIS Resigning his Sword at York Town Oct. 19, 1781" and "LAFAYETTE (Crowned in Glory)" Legends
c. 1824, Historic Copper Lusterware Pitcher "CORNWALLIS Resigning his Sword at York Town Oct. 19, 1781" and "LAFAYETTE (Crowned in Glory)," Transfers, Choice Near Mint.
This high quality, colorful Lusterware Pitcher measures 5.25" tall x 3" at its base. There are three black transfer illustrations displayed on white fields at center with the overall bright appearance and eye appeal of near New. One side has the legend: "Cornwallis Resigning his Sword at Yorktown Oct. 19, 1781". This design is listed as C. 29 on page 82 in "Anglo-American Ceramics Part I" by Arman. The other side has: "LaFayette (Crowned in Glory)" listed as L.1 on page 123 in the Arman reference. A transfer under the spout shows a lovely group of fruit. In our EAHA October 2016 auction we sold a similar example for $2,160. This is a scarce size and a is lovely example for display. Provenance: From the Collection of the Late Edward C. Gillette.
