Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A fascinating group of eight medical tools, four of bronze, one of brass, one of silver, and two of a copper-silver alloy. Roman surgical instruments were very similar to those described by Hippocrates in the 5th century BCE and Galen in the 2nd century CE - in fact, several of their tools are similar to ones that were in use until the 20th century! We know of many of these styles of tools from the well-preserved House of the Surgeon in Pompeii. Size of largest: 5.25" H (13.3 cm)
Provenance: private Davis collection, Houston, Texas, USA; two of the smaller spoons are ex-Gerhard Hirsch Nachfolger Auction 286 - Objects (February 5-8, 2013, lot 576); the rest are either: ex-private English collection; ex-Bridgeview Galleries, Murray Bridge, South Australia; ex-private old German collection; ex-private London, United Kingdom collection; ex-private Los Angeles, California, USA collection; ex-private Soest, Netherlands collection; ex-private Michigan, USA collection
All items legal to buy/sell under U.S. Statute covering cultural patrimony Code 2600, CHAPTER 14, and are guaranteed to be as described or your money back.
A Certificate of Authenticity will accompany all winning bids.
