Description
**First Time At Auction**
Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. One gorgeous leaded bronze and two leaded copper fibula or brooches with crossbow shapes. The largest has an arching back, protruding bands, and a hook on the head to hold the coil for the wire pin in place. The body is rectangular with rows of raised dots. The bottom peripheries of the body curve upward to form the pin latch. The other two fibulae are similarly crossbow shaped with arching necks. One has an onion-dome shaped terminal on the tail, and the other has three dome shapes on the head. Fibula were used to pin the cloaks and clothing of Romans, but they also served as impressive decorative ornaments that could show social or even military status. Size largest: 3.5" L (8.9 cm); smallest: 2.375" L (6 cm)
Provenance: ex-private New Jersey, USA collection by family descent before 2000

Condition
Pins do not articulate. Cross shaped fibula head is reattached with losses along break lines and missing the coiled part of the wire pin. Heavy patina and mineral deposits on all.
