Item Details
Description
Roman, Imperial period, ca. 1st to 3rd century CE. A delightful miniature bronze ram, cast as part of a fibula (brooch). He is portrayed in a peaceful, seated position, his head erect, with his large, curved horns carefully detailed. Below his body is a leaf-shaped finial that likely once had a clasp attached to it. By Roman times, the ram was already an ancient symbol of virility and masculinity, and the god Mercury was often accompanied by a ram to symbolize fertility. Size: 1.45" W x 1.75" H (3.7 cm x 4.4 cm); 2.55" H (6.5 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private East Coast, USA collection
