George Salmon was a 19th-century English mathematician known for his systems of algebraic geometry. During the 1860s, Salmon published numerous papers and essays in which he solved and defined various mathematic problems. This 1862 edition of Salmon’s “Treatise on the Analytic Geometry of Three Dimensions” is filled with equations, illustrated figures, and mathematical explanations.

Hyman Joseph Ettlinger (1889 – 1986) was educated at Washington University (Bachelor's degree, 1910) and Harvard University (Master's, 1911; Ph.D., 1920). He joined the faculty of the University of Texas at Austin (UT) in 1913 and retired in 1968. He was especially noted for his teaching.

Ettlinger's research was in differential equations and the calculus of variations. He was associated with the UT Defense Research Laboratory, where he worked on aerodynamics. He was chairman of the Department of Pure Mathematics for approximately 25 years.
