ENGLISH CREAMWARE TRANSFER-PRINTED CERAMIC JUG / PITCHER, featuring black transfer images including one side with an exotic scene, possibly India, of figures leading elephants and a castle in background, reverse depicting a couple fishing with horses and deer at water's edge and castle-like manor house in background, with a poem printed below spout "MAIDENHEAD / Happy is the Man that has a good wife / And blefsed is he that has none / And cursed is he that goes to a whore / And leaves a good wife at home". Possibly Liverpool, England. Fourth quarter 18th/early 19th century. 9 1/2" HOA.
Having areas of restoration including spout with bruise, chip, and flake to foot edge, and wear to transfer decorations with scattered scratches.
