Item Details
Description
Theodore Roosevelt (1901-09)Roosevelt vs. Newett: A Transcript of the Testimony taken and Depositions read at Marquette, Mich.No place: Privately Printed, (1914). First and only edition. 8vo. 362, (2) (blank) pp. Publisher's black cloth, stamped in gilt; all edges trimmed; text very lightly toned. A near-fine copy.On October 11, 1912, George Newett, editor of the Iron Ore newspaper in Ishpeming, Michigan, published a searing attack on President Theodore Roosevelt, accusing him of drunk and disorderly conduct: "Roosevelt lies and curses in a most disgusting way; he gets drunk, too, and that not infrequently, and all his intimates know about it." In response, Roosevelt sued Newett for libel and arrived in Ishpeming with a large group to testify on his behalf. Newett, unable to present testimony or witnesses to argue for the veracity of his claims was forced to make a retraction. Roosevelt's cousin, W. Emlen Roosevelt, who testified in Roosevelt's favor, published this volume as a lasting record against the libelous claim.
