Woodrow Wilson Champions Keeping Government in the Hands of the People
Single page typed letter signed on letterhead "The White House, Washington", 7" x 8.75". Dated "November 20, 1916", and signed by Woodrow Wilson "Woodrow Wilson". Slight fading to the signature, with some grubbyness to the paper and a pale damp stain along the outer margins. Verso with adhesive remnants.
An important letter highlighting Wilson's political position "Your kind message of congratulation gave me peculiar pleasure, because it came from one who has served at my side in the effort to keep the Government in the hands of the people ..."
Like Roosevelt before him, Woodrow Wilson regarded himself as the personal representative of the people. “No one but the President,” he said, “seems to be expected … to look out for the general interests of the country.” He developed a program of progressive reform and asserted international leadership in building a new world order. Congress passed the Underwood-Simmons Act, which reduced the tariff on imports and imposed a new federal income tax. It also passed legislation establishing the Federal Reserve (which provides a system for regulating the nation’s banks, credit and money supply) and the Federal Trade Commission (which investigates and prohibits unfair business practices). Other accomplishments included child labor laws, an eight-hour day for railroad workers and government loans to farmers.
