Item Details
Description
Japan, ca. Edo Period. Yokoi Kinkoku (1761-1832). Portrait of the Haiku poet Yasui (1658-1743). Yasui's poem — with calligraphy by Kinkoku — can be translated as follows:

Wild geese migrating

they ate much of our wheat fields but oh!

the sorrow of parting

Signed with painter's seal. Yasui was a pupil of Sasho.

Purchased from Mathias Komor on November 3, 1978 (see photocopy of receipt). Custom box.

Ex: Estate of Diran Dohanian, distinguished art historian and Asian art specialist. Most of Professor Dohanian's collection was formed in the 1960s-70s, beginning when he was residing in India conducting research for his book, "The Mahayana Buddhist Sculpture Of Ceylon." He later developed a keen interest in Japanese and Chinese scroll paintings, a number of which are included here.
