Japanese Scroll Painting,"Three Monkeys", Kakemon, 18th century, is watercolor on silk. Possibly by Ueda Tangai (Japanese 1863-1939), whose real name is Miyatake Masatoshi was from Shikoku, the large island to the south of Hiroshima.This artist is mentioned in an 1810 catalog of Japanese illustrators, per Japanese Biographical Index, published 2004. Painting depicts a mother, father and baby monkey on a flowering branch; the mother grooming the baby while the father observes with concern. Remounted in Hong Kong in the 1970's. Purchased for collection in early 1989. Comes with Brocade Scroll Box.
