Eisenstein Re: Ivan the Terrible

Autograph Letter Signed, “S. Eisenstein”, in red pencil, in Cyrillic, Alma-Ata, May 6, 1943, 1 p., 5.5” x 8”, on “Central United Film Studio for the Film Production of Ivan the Terrible” letterhead stationery, to Alexander Mihailovich. Minor separation at folds, else Fine condition.

Eisenstein pens, in full, “I am asking you very much to help comrade Naumova who is working as costume designer on my film for her short story in Moscow. On food and living. Grateful in advance.”

Sergey Mikhaylovich Eisenstein (1898-1948) was a Russian film director and theorist whose work includes the three film classics Battleship Potemkin (1925), Alexander Nevsky (1938), and Ivan the Terrible (released in two parts, 1944 and 1958). In his concept of film montage, images, perhaps independent of the “main” action, are presented for maximum psychological impact.
