AN EARLY REPUBLIC OF TEXAS DOCUMENT, TEXAS SCRIP, SIGNED BY THOMAS TOBY, ISSUED UNDER DAVID G. BRUNET, INTERIM PRESIDENT OF TEXAS, OCTOBER 10, 1836, engraving on paper with hand inscriptions in ink pen, signed in plate twice by David G. Burnet, interim President of Texas, on May 24, 1836, whereupon he gives explicit privileges from the Executive Department in Zavala, with permissions by WM. H. Jack, Secretary of State, Bailey Hardeman, Secretary of Treasury, Lorenzo de Zavala, Vice President, Mirabeau B. Lamar, Secretary of War, and P.W. Grayson, Attorney General, the "Executive Government of Texas," commissioning Thomas Toby, Esq. of New Orleans, signs on page one over "Loan Called;" Thomas Toby and brother were commissioned for the immediate sale of public lands in Texas not to exceed five hundred thousand acres, below the document notarized, hand inscribed by Hilary Breton Cenas representing Christy, former Texas Revolutionary participant, "now temporarily absent," according to Cenas' inscription, and below a faint "Louisiana Notary Public, New Orleans," seal; the scrip originally sold to William P. Miller of Texas, no. 625, six hundred and forty acres, and verso the scrip was transferred during Sam Houston's tenure as President of Texas, to Joseph Crosby of Baltimore, Maryland, on December 9th, 1836. 17" x 21" Provenance: Estate of Dr. Paul E. Condition
Some toning, mild tears, creases as issued, losses, ink bleed, but overall in good to very good condition, wear commensurate with age and use.
