May 24, 1865-Dated Civil War Period, Printed General Order No. 55 by Gideon Welles as Secretary of the Navy, “A Proclamation” on Behalf of President Andrew Johnson, Regarding International Trade, Choice Crisp Near Mint.
General Order No. 55, 2 pages, measuring 8.5” x 5.5”, to the Navy from Gideon Welles as an intermediary of Andrew Jackson. The “Proclamation” made by Andrew Johnson states that international trade is open in all seaports of the Southern States except for those of Texas, starting the first of July. All restrictions to trade East of the Mississippi river except those relating to War contraband are also removed. Signed in print by: “Gideon Welles”, Secretary of the Navy, “Andrew Johnson,” President of the United States, and “W. Hunter,” Acting Secretary of State. Fresh, crisp and in beautiful clean condition.
