Description
Important September 3rd, 1838 Republic of Texas document detailing the votes for elected office, including President. This document records votes for the election of President in the Republic, along with Vice President, Senator and Representative. 55 voters who registered in Austin County are listed by name on one side. Reverse details each vote for the candidates, marked by a single line per vote. The eventual winner, Mirabeau Lamar, is shown as receiving 46 votes President, compared to only 6 for candidate Robert Wilson.

Signed and dated by clerks J.M. Pennington and William B. Gayle. Also signed by Justice of the Peace William Hunter, among others.

The 1838 Republic of Texas presidential election was held September 3rd. According to the Republic’s constitution, the term of office for the first President was two years, making incumbent Sam Houston ineligible. Lamar, the then acting Vice President, ran against Senator Robert Wilson. Wilson was late entering the race, as two previous presidential candidates had committed suicide earlier in the campaign. Mirabeau Lamar obtained 96.5% of the vote, defeating Wilson in a lopsided affair. David G Burnet was declared Vice President with 55.4% of the vote.

Mirabeau Lamar (1798-1859) was born in Louisville, Georgia and grew up on his father’s cotton plantation. After studying law and being admitted to the bar in 1833, he ran an unsuccessful campaign for Congress. By 1835, after the death of his brother by suicide, he found himself traveling and settling in Texas. He joined Sam Houston’s army in 1836 and fought with distinction in the Battle of San Jacinto. The same year, after Texas gained independence, he was elected Vice President.

As President, Lamar’s first address to the Texas Congress was aimed at driving the Comanche and Cherokee tribes from their land, to make land available for the Republic. His term is remembered by the financial difficulties caused by the Cherokee War of 1838-39 and printing of “redback” money.

Republic of Texas documents are exceedingly rare.
