This lot consists of a framed oil painting on canvas, rendered in the modern style of Fauvist painter Henri Matisse (French, 1869-1954). "Henri Matisse" is inscribed in white paint at lower right. Image depicts a reclining female nude; the entire composition is done in a bright, Mediterranean blue-and-white palette. A striking piece that has been executed in the modernist style for which Matisse was so well known. Overall dimensions approximately 22" x 18.5".

Reverse side of piece features two affixed labels and one stamp. The stamp appears to read, "PM". One paper label bears the name and information of a New York gallery called Hammer Galleries, which attributes the piece to Henri Matisse and offers the title "Nu Bleu". A second, larger label reads as follows:

Henri Matisse (French, 1869 - 1954) was an artist known for both his fluid use of colour and his original draughtsmanship. He was an illustrator, printmaker, and sculptor, but is known primarily as a painter. Matisse is commonly regarded, along with Pablo Picasso, as one of the artists who best helped to define the revolutionary developments in the visual arts throughout the opening decades of the twentieth century.
