Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on canvas, done in the style of modern artist Mark Rothko (American, 1903-1970). "Mark Rothko" is hand-written en verso along with the date "1955". This bold, color-blocked image depicts geometrical fields of pure color. Done in the understated, avant-garde style for which Rothko is so well known. This unframed piece measures approximately 20" x 20".
Mark Rothko considered his paintings to be experiences that should engross the viewer, rather than simply objects. Rothko aptly described his paintings as being both 'intimate and intense' (M. Rothko, quoted in Writings on Art: Mark Rothko, New Haven and London, 2006, p. 99). Rothko struck upon his classic compositional format in 1949. It consisted of two or three rounded rectangular forms floating upon a field of color that bleeds to the edge. This extremely pared-down arrangement allowed the chromatic fields to carry the full weight of expression, allowing Rothko to articulate an astonishing range of intense emotional states through sensitive arrangements of color. This painting is signed in the lower left and on reverse."
Mark Rothko, born Markus Yakovlevich Rothkowitz (American, 1903-1970), came from a modest but highly educated family of Jewish-Latvian descent. Rothko drew influence in his paintings from world mythology, the writings of Friedrich Nietzche, and his own travels. Although Rothko himself refused to adhere to any art movement, he is generally identified as an abstract expressionist.
