Description
This lot consists of an oil painting on unstretched canvas, done in the soft, tasteful style of Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917). "Degas" is hand-painted at lower left. Image depicts a beautiful woman, sitting alone in some small Parisian cafe. Beside her is a scruffy looking man, and, in front of her, a tiny glass of absinthe. Appears to be a study for Degas' famous painting, "L'Absinthe [The Absinthe Drinker]" (1875-1876). This Impressionist piece would be a fine highlight to any collector's gallery. Overall unframed dimensions measure approximately 38" x 31".
Edgar Degas (French, 1834-1917) was a French artist famous for his paintings, sculptures, prints, and drawings. He is especially associated with the subject of the theatre; more than half of his works depict ballet dancers. Regarded as one of the founders of Impressionism, Degas rejected the term, preferring to be called a Realist. He was a superb draftsman and particularly masterly in depicting movement, which can clearly be seen in his rendition of dancers, racecourse subjects, and anatomical studies. His portraits are notable for their psychological complexity and for their portrayal of human isolation.
