Item Details
Description
14th-15th century AD. A group of three lead-alloy pilgrim's badges, each formed as three discoid wafers with figural imagery, chevron attachment loops between. 15.1 grams total, 35-37mm (1 1/2"). Property of an East Anglia gentleman; previously in a private collection formed before 2000. The Holy Blood of Wilsnack refers to three communion wafers (hosts) which survived a fire in 1383 AD that was set to burn the church and village to the ground. The hosts were regarded as miraculous and a cult sprang up in the town (Bad Wilsnack, Germany) which became the destination of medieval religious pilgrimages, and the proceeds enabled the town to build St. Nicholas' Church (also known as Holy Blood Church) at the site.
