Description
14th-16th century AD. Group comprising: a 'Canterbury Bell' pewter pilgrim's token for St Thomas Becket being a small domed bell with shaft pierced for suspension, with a fragmentary badge for St Thomas depicting a standing figure wearing vestments and mitre, holding a cross with pin remains to reverse; a pewter pilgrim's badge for Walsingham depicting Mary holding infant Christ and sceptre standing on a crescent to obverse with pin remains to reverse; a copper-alloy pendant cross, the arms expanding to circles, with partial suspension loop; an English pewter token depicting a cross with pellet-in-annulet in angles to obverse and 'double-sided comb' design to reverse, pierced four times for attachment as a pilgrim's token. From a private collection; Oxfordshire, UK; acquired from BK Art and Antique Auctions, 24 May 2001; lot 404 [part]; all previously with Bernard Pickard, Dorset, UK, between 1987-1994; found Hampshire, near Canterbury, and the Thames, London; accompanied by various letters and catalogue slips from Bernard Pickard, and the original BK invoice.
