Northwest Coast - Clarence Q. Wells (Haida, b. 1950). A hand-carved wooden box embellished with beautiful Haida paintings in red and black. The box is signed by Clarence Wells, a well known Northwest Coast artist who has received numerous international awards for his work. Wells was born in Prince Rupert in 1950, and is a member of the Gitsen Clan of the Tsimpshien, belonging to the Blackfish (Killerwhale) clan of his tribe. Wells has traveled extensively to lecture about Northwest Coast art at universities and other venues. Interestingly, although Wells' Haida works receive the highest praise from Northwest Coast art aficionados, he also is beloved for his Tlingit and Tsimshian works, and leading anthropological scholars recognize the work he does to represent all these peoples throughout the world. Very light abrasions to lid, body, and base, with one fissure to black pigment along basin surface, otherwise intact and excellent. Great remains of pigment and smooth surface textures throughout.
