Description
An exceptionally fine Japanese Makie lacquered wood clothing box with cover. Late Edo period, c.1850. Low rectangular box, the rim decorated with nashigi gold speckles, the top decorated with two differing large mon (emblem) crests of stylized imperial chrysanthemum flower-heads. Executed in gold hiramkie and nashiji on a black lacquer ground. The sides with similar motif. Set with green silk kumihimo tasseled ropes ties. Measures 34" x 18.25" x 8" high. CONDITION NOTE: wood crack showing at underside corner, some fading and minor discoloration, see photos.
