Description
This is a Bronze Sculpture depicting the legendary Saint George Killing a dragon. The slaying is said to have happened in a place called Silene in Libya. A plaquebearing dragon lived around a town of ancient lore that had a pond, as large as a lake, where it envenomed all the countryside. To appease the dragon, the people of Silene used to feed it two sheep everyday, and when the sheep failed, they fed it their children, chosen by lottery. It happened that the lot fell on the kings daughter. The king, distraught with grief, told the people they could have all his gold and silver and half of his kingdom if his daughter were spared; the people refused. The daughter was sent out to the lake decked out as a bride, to be fed to the dragon. Saint George by chance rode past the lake. the princess, trembling, sought to send him away, but George vowed to remain. The viewer witnesses as St. George Valiantly arises to the noble moment of saintly protection as he rears his spear on high, jutting a fatal wound into the dragon that twists and writhes under his weight. The Sculpture was cast using the ageold method of lost wax casting and stained with a brown patina finish for preservation. It is mounted upon a black marble base. Bronze Dimensions with Marble Base: Height 20 X Width 15 inches. Weight: 50 LBS.
