Description
Andy Warhol's Personally Owned Iconic Rubinacci Tie W. Superb Provenance

Deep green silk Italian made Rubinacci Silk Tie, personally owned by Andy Warhol with impeccable provenance. Fine condition. Accompanied by a letter of provenance which came with 3 pieces, all which were previously owned by Warhol and then gifted to his friend Baird Jones, an associate and friend of Andy from the 70's to Warhol's death in 1987. The set of 3 pieces were later purchased directly from Baird Jones by Stephen Waldman on December 2, 2006, and then hence to our consignor. Photocopies of the letter signed by Baird Jones identifying the chain of custody and ownership will accompany this item along with a photocopy of the signed letter from Stephen Waldman who purchased the pieces directly from Jones. The originals of both will accompany the "Big Shot" Polaroid camera.

As influential as his art is in shaping fashion trends, it is Warhol’s own style that – like many celebrated creators – came to represent a distinct aspect of his personal brand. Ironically though, his dress sense was defined by a vastly different aesthetic to that of his idiosyncratically garish prints. For someone so fixated on physical appearance, his antithetically minimalist approach to fashion was perhaps a reaction to his observations of ostentation – a statement in itself. In his 1977 collection of reflections and aphorisms, The Philosophy of Andy Warhol (From A to B and Back Again), he wrote, “A good plain look is my favourite look. If I didn’t want to look so ‘bad,’ I would want to look ‘plain’".

When he wasn’t dressed down in casual separates, with his favorite looks of jeans, button down shirt, blazer and a tie, Warhol tended towards sharply cut slim fit suits in black or navy. He favored iconic British tailoring for its classic shirts, which he paired with a patterned tie or simple black bow tie for more formal occasions. Of course, as Warhol demonstrated through his outfit choices, "plain" doesn’t equate to boring. In fact, the classicality of such a wardrobe lends itself to versatility and timelessness: Warhol’s effortless combination of staples transcended trends and remains relevant 50 years on.

Warhol fashion ties came in different color combinations, from conservative stripes to bold colors and everything in between.

"Fashion wasn't what you wore someplace," Warhol once said. "It was the whole reason for going."

The "tie" is iconic Andy, representative of his intrigue of style, fashion, simplicity and his creation of the Warhol brand .

Shown below is a transcript of the letter of authenticity signed by Baird Jones, followed by the transcript of the letter from Stephen Waldman.

"My name is Baird Jones. I've been collecting art and various items owned by famous people since the mid 1970's. Many of the items in my personal collection has been given to me personally. Andy Warhol is one example. Andy was a dear friend of mine; we attended many parties in New York together from the 70's to his death in 1987. During that time, we also began working together. Besides artwork, the only items I have left that belonged to Andy, which he gave me personally, are the "Big Shot' Polaroid camera, the antique glasses and the tie."

"I, Stephen Waldman, confirm that I purchased three Andy Warhol owned items from Baird Jones in2006

-BigShot Polaroid Camera

-T.T. Johnson glasses

-Rubinacci tie"
