Description
Truman TLS on Iran, Russia and the Shah, Ex-Forbes

TRUMAN, HARRY S. Typed Letter Signed, “Harry”, August 18, 1953, 1 p., Kansas City, MO, 7” x 10.5”, to Dean Acheson. Mailing folds, indentation from paper clip and staple holes at top left corner, else very good condition. From the Forbes Collection.

Truman writes, in part, “I’d like very much to have your present view on what effect the Armistice has had on our Russian trends and what your guess is for the next strike.”

“It looks as if the Iranian situation has come to a conclusion where the Russians may walk in and take over.”

“If you will remember, we had things in shape at one time so that Shah could have taken control of the Government of Iran and I think he would have been able at that time to work things out but he balked at the most important point and now he seems to have stepped in in a hurry and has left himself without a throne or government.”

Truman ends his letter, “I am enclosing you a letter from Samuel S. Freedman … He is inviting me to deliver a lecture … Your advice will be highly appreciated.” A copy of this letter is included.

Ex. The Forbes Collection. Malcolm Forbes (1919-1990), American owner-publisher of Forbes magazine, and consummate collector, amassed one of the most substantial and broad collections of such breadth and depth that it filled a half-dozen residences, and sat on three continents. Many of his manuscripts were sold in multi-million dollar sales by Christie's in the early 2000s. The Forbes name is considered to be the apex of provenance when attached to an item like the one above. We are honored to have been chosen by the family to sell at auction the substantial balance of the collection.

This item comes with a Certificate from John Reznikoff, a premier authenticator for both major 3rd party authentication services, PSA and JSA (James Spence Authentications), as well as numerous auction houses.
