Samuel Francis Smith, Writer of "America", Signed CDV Photo

Beautifully signed CDV photo of Samuel Francis Smith, the lyricist for "America (My Country 'Tis of Thee)", the United States' national anthem until 1931, when it was replaced by "The Star-Spangled Banner". Smith signs below his image, "S.F. Smith", with Boston photographer's backstamp of "J.J. Hawes" upon verso. CDV measures 2.5" x 4.25". Very good to near fine condition.

A Baptist minister, Smith wrote the lyrics for "America" as a young man at the Andover Theological Academy in the early 1830s.
