A Very Fine Old Senufo Kpeliye Mask, worn by members of the Poro, a secret society which oversees initiation ceremonies in the Ivory Coast of West Africa. The mask features delicate oval form with geometric projections at the sides. Raised and incised scarification patterns ornament the smooth, glossy surface. Of interest is the central anthropomorphic figure of a man with a HORNBILL coming from his abdomen, the hornbill is a sacred symbol and clan totem of the Poro society.
