Description
Letter written by Edward L. Smith of the 48th New York State Volunteers. Two pages with postal cover. Please see fourth listed picture for the scan of a full transcription.
Private Smith writes that he is well and asks that an “Edward Lord” be told when he goes to enlist that “he must keep his spirit up and not get homesick.” He goes on to make several requests and notes that “Uncle Sam is owing me $64.”
Private Smith died of disease in Raleigh, North Carolina not long after writing this letter.
