As profusely maker marked as you are going to find. This standard P53 Tower Enfield was manufactured by Bentley and Playfair. It is marked Bentley & Playfair on the underside of the stock. The barrel breech is stamped B & P -- The stock is also stamped - B & P over 3 . The rear sight is stamped B & H. The lock is dated 1863 which is a rare date to find on an Enfield. Most Enfields we find are dated 1861 or 1862. Both US and CS governments imported tens of thousands of these during the first two years of the war. By 1863 the north had gun production in full swing and imported very few arms from Europe. Also, by 1863 the blockade was having effect and the flow of arms and equipment to the south slowed to a trickle. Consequently Enfields dated 1863 are scarce. 1864 dates are downright rare. This rifle musket is VG to Fine condition. 100% original, 100% complete, and mechanically perfect. Rifling in the bore is strong with some patches of roughness. I rate it VG.
We donÂ’t know for sure whether this was northern or southern issued but I would give the edge in favor of the rebs because of the 1863 date.
