Item Details
Description
A fine French 18th century double barrel coach gun / shotgun combination of top quality manufacture. This is one of the more interesting antique firearms I have owned. It shows evidence of having been carefully cared for and preserved through many years. This started out in Flintlock configuration around the time of the French Revolution, possibly a generation earlier. It is a double barrel pistol grip short barrel 28 gauge shotgun with a detachable shoulder stock. Without the stock it was an outstanding close quarters combat or self defense gun. With the shoulder stock it was perfectly suitable for taking game. The ideal firearm for a man traveling in the countryside. It remained in service for MANY decades, being converted to percussion ignition at some point early in the 1800s. Close examination of the detachable butt shows clearly that the original wood was damaged sometime between 1750 and 1830 and the owner had the butt stock professionally repaired. The wood in the butt stock is clearly cut from a different tree than the wood on the gun itself. But the engraved steel furniture on the butt is quite obviously the same original steel furniture that the butt started out with. It is a perfect match with the engraved steel furniture on the gun itself. Peculiar to French long arms the butt stock has a cutout and padded cheek rest. Originally this cheek rest would have been velvet covering horse hair padding. This cheek rest is a utilitarian replacement executed in leather. In my opinion guns with the velvet cheek rests look like a sissy gun. having the padded butt stock repaired utilizing all the original steel furniture. A very handsome and rare antique weapon and a true conversation piece.
