Description
31 caliber percussion Pepperbox with 4 inch barrels. Early Grafton style with longer dog-leg bag handle. This style is from the early period of the Allen pepperboxes. Nicely marked on the barrel is Patent 1837. The last one of this pattern I saw was inscribed to a Mexican War soldier. It has a brown patina overall. 100% original 100% complete and mechanically perfect. Adam Spies was born in 1785 and worked in England and New York as a dealer in swords and guns. He undoubtedly made swords as well. Most of the guns and swords I have encountered with the Spies marking date from the 1820s to 1840s era. I have a beautiful large bore English flintlock fowler here circa 1835-40 signed by him.
