Handsome Civil War Enfield Rifle Musket-A top notch specimen of the P-53 English Enfield as carried by tens of thousands of soldiers both North and South. This one is near fine condition. It is much original factory blue on the barrel that has oxidized to a pretty plum color. The rifling in the bore is worn but present. Bore is somewhat dark and scaly. I would rate it fair. It is 100% original. 100% complete, and is mechanically new. There are rumors of case color on the lock, super crisp edges on the wood. The lock is crisply marked \"1863 TOWER\" and has the standard crown marking. Barrel is stamped with standard CW proof marks including the 25* 25* marks indicating .577 caliber and showing that it was absolutely sent to America. There is a replaced piece of wood below the lock plate. The main spring broke at some point and an armorer with great talent repaired the resulting loss of wood. Of some note is the date of 1863. This date is scarcer than the 1861 and 1862 dates. By this point in the Civil War the North was pretty much able to supply its troops with new model US made arms. The south still imported a large quantity of Enfields in 1863. An 1864 date is the scarcest, but 1863 is also scarce and very likely used by Confederates or captured off blockade runners. A good solid CW Enfield much nicer than 90% of others on the market.
