Emma Goldman Typed Letter On Her Lecture Course, Spectacular Signature

Single page typed letter signed, 8.25" x 11".  Dated "September 8, 1934", and signed with a large flamboyant large signature by Emma Goldman "Emma Goldman". Expected folds, tiny nicks along upper edge, else near fine.

Emma Goldman (1869–1940) stands as a major figure in the history of American radicalism and feminism. An influential and well-known anarchist of her day, Goldman was an early advocate of free speech, birth control, women's equality and independence, and union organization. Her criticism of mandatory conscription of young men into the military during World War I led to a two-year imprisonment, followed by her deportation in 1919. For the rest of her life until her death in 1940, she continued to participate in the social and political movements of her age, from the Russian Revolution to the Spanish Civil War.

This lovely letter has her marketing/writing to a "friend", noting her lecture course suggesting that the person will distribute her cards "among your friends", and asked if "you can also help with the sale of tickets".

With the exception of a brief ninety-day lecture tour in 1934 (of which this letter eludes to), Emma Goldman spent the remaining twenty-one years of her life (1919-1940) in exile from the United States. During this period she lived in Russia, Sweden, Germany, France, England, and Canada, never finding a political "home" outside the United States.

In no country did Emma Goldman feel more estranged than in her native Russia. She was shocked by the ruthless authoritarianism of the Bolshevik regime, its severe repression of anarchists, and its disregard for individual freedom. But she continued to defend the revolution. She argued forcefully in "My Disillusionment in Russia" (1923) that the emergence of the Bolshevik party-state actually crushed the revolution. Notwithstanding the prescience of this critique, the persistence and stridency of her anti-Bolshevism alienated her from many European and American leftists. Perhaps in part to counter this estrangement and the loneliness of her exile years, Emma maintained a lively correspondence with a large number of Americans and Europeans
