Gerald Ford Signed 1st Edition Portrait of the Assassin
A superb 1st edition hardcover copy of Portrait of the Assassin (New York: Simon and Schuster, 1965), cowritten by Gerald Ford and John R. Stiles. The red boards are gilt-embossed along the spine under the original dust jacket with a protective sleeve. Not retail clipped. The binding at front is slightly loose. The bottom right corner of page 279/280 is missing, otherwise the deckled pages are clean and crisp. Else near fine. 508pp. 8vo.
Portrait of the Assassin was published in the spring of 1965, less than two years after John F. Kennedy's assassination. Michigan Congressman and future U.S. President Gerald Ford wrote the book along with John R. Stiles, his special assistant during the Warren Commission. The book extensively treats assassin Lee Harvey Oswald, based on information compiled by the Commission.
The Warren Commission was a 7-person special task force appointed by Lyndon B. Johnson a week following JFK's assassination. Commissioners included members of the Supreme Court, Congress, and the C.I.A., as well as a longtime presidential adviser. The commission conducted interviews and gathered intelligence over the course of ten months. It produced an eponymous report concluding that Lee Harvey Oswald had alone killed JFK and that Jack Ruby had alone killed Lee Harvey Oswald.
