Oceania, Papua New Guinea, West Sepik River region, Kurungunam village, Urim peoples, ca. mid-20th century CE. A sizable eating bowl known as a "kudruk," hand-built from coarse pottery with a hemispherical form, a rounded bottom, a deep basin, and a thick rim. The exterior is covered with dense linear, circular, and geometric motifs formed from applied pottery cords with impressed segmentation and applied pink pigmentation for further embellishment. Lucite display stand for photography purposes only. Size: 12" W x 8.125" H (30.5 cm x 20.6 cm).
Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985

Minor nicks and abrasions to rim, body, and base, with light softening to some finer details, fading to original pigmentation, and light encrustations, otherwise intact and very good. Light earthen deposits throughout.
