Oceania, Papua New Guinea, ca. early to mid 20th century CE. An exceptional eating bowl known as a "kudruk," hand-built from pottery of dark red-brown hues with a hemispherical form, a conical bottom, and an annular rim that curves inward over a deep basin. The intricate exterior is deeply incised with horizontal and vertical registers of undulating striations and geometric motifs formed from applied pottery cords with impressed segmentation and applied white pigmentation for further embellishment. Lucite display stand is for photography purposes only. Size: 8.25" in diameter x 6.75" H (21 cm x 17.1 cm)
Provenance: private Tucson, Arizona, USA collection, acquired between 1950 and 1985
