Nelson Thomas
Declaration Signer Thomas Nelson Magnificent DS with Superb Signature
THOMAS NELSON, Partially Printed Document Signed, Bond to Alexander Macauley, August 6, 1788. 2 pp., 7.375" x 9.125". Expected folds; some fold reinforcements on verso; seal intact; excellent dark signature.
Former Virginia Governor Thomas Nelson signed this bond to secure his debt to Yorktown merchant Alexander Macaulay (1754-1798). Acknowledging a debt to Macaulay of £352.10s.3¼p., Nelson signed the bond for double the amount of the debt, or £705.0s.6½d. As long as Nelson paid the original debt "in specie on demand", the bond would be void, but if he did not, Macaulay could sue for the amount of the bond. On January 20, 1789, two weeks after Nelson's death, Macaulay transferred the bond to Williamsburg merchant Samuel Beall (1748-1793) "for value received." This later transaction made Beall a creditor of Nelson's estate.
Excerpt
"Know all Men, by these Presents, that I Thomas Nelson of York Town am held and firmly bound unto Alexander Macaulay of the same in the just and full sum of Seven Hundred and five Pounds and six pence ½ penny to be paid unto the said Alexr Macaulay, his certain Attorney, his Heirs, Executors, Administrators, or Assigns; to which Payment, well and truly to be made, I bind myself my Heirs, Executors, and Administrators, jointly and severally, firmly by these Presents. Sealed with my Seal, dated this Sixth Day of August Anno Domini 1788."
Thomas Nelson (1738-1789) was born in Yorktown, Virginia, and graduated from Christ's College at Cambridge University in 1760. He returned home in 1761, and was elected to the Virginia House of Burgesses that same year. In 1762, he married Lucy Grymes, and they had eleven children. He represented Virginia in the Continental Congress and signed the Declaration of Independence. Nelson served as commanding general of the Lower Virginia Militia and served as Governor of Virginia for five months in 1781.
