1813 Master Commandant Oliver H. Perry United States Mint Naval Medal "We have met the enemy and they are ours" War of 1812
1813 Master Commandant Oliver H. Perry United States Mint Naval Medal, Struck in Bronze, About Uncirculated.
Julian NA-21. 59mm. Struck at the United States Mint, list No. 522. Lovely, golden-brown patina. Face shows a chest-up pose of Perry in uniform, surrounded by "Oliverus Hazzard Perry Pro Patria Vicit / Presented by the Government of Pennsylvania." Reverse shows a center image of a battle scene surrounded by "We have met the enemy and they are ours. / British Fleet on Lake Erie. Captured September 10, 1813." This was struck using a replacement die that has the inscription noting 1880 near the lower edge on reverse. Struck from the original dies, but the reverse die was the 1880 substitution of a new copy reverse die. The medium golden-brown surfaces are satiny on the reverse and well struck. The obverse field exhibits small to moderate crusting. These later issue dies are actually much rarer than the Originals, since fewer were made and sold over the years.
