FBI In Film: Warner Brothers Proposes That The FBI's Melvin Purvis Star in "National broadcastÂ…that would fit your personality and reputation like a glove"

1p typed letter bearing the secretarial signature of company executive Jack Warner (1892-1978) as "Jack" at bottom right. Written in Hollywood, California on February 6, 1937. On cream watermarked stationery with "Warner Bros. Theatres / Pacific Coast Division / Hollywood, Calif." letterhead, complete with the "WB" logo at upper left. Expected folds, wrinkles, and a tiny closed tear along the bottom edge. A few staple marks at upper left, else near fine. 8.375" x 10.875".

Jack's correspondent was Melvin Purvis (1903-1960), the former FBI Chicago bureau chief famous for capturing three of the city's most notorious gangsters: Baby Face Nelson, John Dillinger, and Pretty Boy Floyd. Purvis had resigned from the bureau in 1935, possibly because of a conflict with its jealous director J. Edgar Hoover. Now, two years later, Warner Brothers made Purvis an appealing business proposition.

In part:

"…there is something that I wish you would give your careful consideration to. Would you be amenable toward a national broadcast tie-up? I know of a deal whereby you would be starred in a program that would fit your personality and reputation like a glove.

The program would be one-half hour, once a week, and embrace outlets from coast to coast. All material would be prepared for you in advance, subject, of course, to your edition, and would, I am confident, contribute to your reputation and prestige. The financial end, I am assured, could be made most interesting to you…"

In 1923, Jack Warner, along with older brothers Harry, Albert, and Sam, cofounded Warner Brothers, one of Hollywood's earliest film studios. Jack had jockeyed for complete control of the company by the 1950s. Though he was dictatorial and difficult, Jack was responsible for making many of the shrewd business decisions that pushed the studio ahead. Warner Brothers is still considered one of the biggest studios in the movie industry today.
