John Tyler Signed Naval Appointment

1p naval appointment signed by President John Tyler (1790-1862) as "John Tyler" near center right. Also cosigned by J.D. Simms, Acting Secretary of the Navy, near center left. Signed in Washington, D.C. on September 8, 1841. Partly printed and partly handwritten on vellum laid down on board. With two gorgeous printed vignettes including a vengeful eagle casting lightning bolts at top, and a pile of bristling armaments at bottom, with embossed seal at center. Docketed at lower left. Expected folds. Overall uneven speckling to the surface. Else good. 13.75" x 17.25".

The naval appointment recommended "Richard S. Trapier" for promotion to Lieutenant in the U.S. Navy.

According to U.S. Naval Registers, Richard Shubrick Trapier (1811-1895) joined the U.S. Navy as a midshipman on December 21, 1831. Over the next fifteen years, Trapier, a native South Carolinian, would serve aboard the frigate Constellation, the sloop Warren, at the Naval Academy in Norfolk, Virginia, and in the West Indies. Trapier resigned his commission in 1846 to become an Episcopalian minister. He served as the longtime rector of St. Michael's Church in Charleston, South Carolina.

John Tyler assumed the presidency in April 1841, just five months before he signed this document, following the death of running mate William Henry Harrison. Tyler self-identified with many strict constructionists and states' rights Southerners, alliances which deepened sectionalism prior to the Civil War.
