Item Details
Description
Cinus de Pistorio. LECTURA SUPER CODICEM. [Strasbourg: Heinrich Eggestein, ca. 1475.] 15.5" x 10.75" (392 x 272mm.) Second volume (of 2), containing parts 6–9. 241 leaves (of 242), lacking only the final blank leaf [D12.] This copy also with two leaves of period manuscript table of contents, bound at front. Bound in the 18th century in full calf, gilt lettering and decoration, spine label incorrectly dated, scuffed and scratched, hinges rubbed and partially cracked though all intact and well bound, lower end-band nearly detached. Contents quite good overall with the following flaws: Pin-hole worming near front and rear of text sometimes shaving or removing a letter, minor instances of foxing in places, occasional light toning, 3 leaves with marginal chips repaired with old paper, overall clean. Very Good. Provenance: *With the armorial gilt crest of Charles Theodor, Duke of Bavaria; marginal ink-notes in various places throughout, of which some are very early (ca. late 15th c. or early 16th c.) and some are later (circa 18th century.) ************************************* FIRST EDITION, WRITTEN BY FRIEND OF DANTE. AN IMPORTANT COMMENTARY ON CIVIL LAW, AND EXTREMELY SCARCE TO MARKET. His commentary surpased previous studies, and the use of his work would continue over the following two centuries. Printed by Heinrich Eggestein, who was one of the earliest European printers outside of Mainz. Only one other example has come to market (according to RBH and ABPC), that being both volumes which sold at Christie's, in 2016 (GBP 35,000, or approximately $50,000.) The present example is beautifully rubricated with numerous smaller initials in red, and contains 4 larger initials (beginning each part) in a variety of colors and designs. An attractive volume. Dated by GW. GW 7045; Goff C697; BMC I, 72; ISTC ic00697000.
