Das heutige Königreich Kuba ist eine von der Herrscherschicht Bushong dominierte Konföderation von rund zwanzig Ethnien mit gemeinsamer Bantu-Abstammung.

Der Name Kuba kommt aus der Bantu-Sprache und bedeutet dort "Wurfmesser". Die ca. 200'000 Menschen zählende Gruppe des Kuba-Stammeskomplexes umfasst u. a. die Bushoong, Kete, Tetela, Ngeende, Lele, Binji, und Shoowa.

Alle diese Ethnien hegen eine spezielle Vorliebe für geometrische Formen und versehen deshalb viele Gegenstände, sowohl aus dem täglichen Gebrauch wie auch aus den Ritualen, gerne über und über mit feinsten Mustern.

Die Kuba kennen eine Vielzahl von Masken. Die bedeutendsten befanden sich im Besitz der königlichen Familie. Die vorliegende Maske stellt eines der zahlreichen Geistwesen der Kuba-Kete dar, welche anlässlich der Beerdigungs-, resp. Initiations-Rituale auftraten. Das Dreieckmuster wird mit den Hautschuppen des Schuppentiers in Verbindung gebracht, die diagonal verlaufenden Streifen werden als Tränendarstellung interpretiert.
