Description
A Carved wooden helmet mask elaborately adorned with shells and beads, metal work and carved designs. The mask represents Bwoom. Bwoom specific identity varies according to different versions of the myth. He may represent the kings younger brother, a person of Twa descent, or a commoner. Embodying a subversive force within the royal court, the Bwoom masquerade is often performed in conflict with the masked figure representing Woot. * This actual mask was danced as the paramount Bwoom mask of the Ngongo kingdom for royal funerals in the Bushoong style, and dates from the 1930's. There is a field photograph included with this lot ( Please message us to see a copy of the Photo) which shows the Ngongo paramount Chief and the Prince along with the Lyol, leader of the Warrior society as well as other main Ngongo Chief's holding the mask, taken in the 1950's. The mask was then given as tribute to the King of all the Kuba in 1971 as tribute from the Ngongo peoples during his coronation. DRC/ Congo, central Africa. The mask measures 20 inches tall, a display stand will be included. *** This Lot is offered with a LIFETIME Guarantee to be authentic as stated, this is a cash back guarantee that does not expire.
