Marcello Malpighi Autograph Document Signed. One page, 7.75" x 5.25"; August 1691. Written in Latin: "I, Professor of Medicine at the public hospital [?], award to Giorgio Baglioni of Naples, this Medical Certificate of completion, and in good faith and with my own hand place my signature thereto. Marcellus Malpighius." Marcello Malpighi (1628-1694) was an Italian physician and biologist who made groundbreaking progress in microscopical anatomy and histology. The Malpighian layer of the epidermis, tufts, and corpuscles are named in his honor. The botanical family Malpighiaceae is also named after him. In 1691, the year this document was written, Malpighi was appointed chief physician to Pope Innocent XII. Condition: Bit of paper loss at top affecting the 6 in the year, and with a small hole at the center affecting the top of a single letter. Written on a larger sheet, 7.75" x 10.5", which has been folded down. With soiling and some wear along fold on integral blank. Annotations in pencil on verso.
