Dimensions: 16-1/4" H x 5-3/4" W
Stunning, Chinese 15th Ming Dynasty Wanli reign period, blue and white fighting dragon porcelain garlic bottle. Tall ovoid body, with bulbous lower region sweeping up into a slender neckline and onion-shaped head, supported on short foot ring. All set opaque Wucai color hand painting on a clean white underglaze base color. Wucai or five-color shades and tones, brightly painted in Wucai design, Opaque colors around the exterior, between the filling motif decorated in colorful vivid sgraffito ground of uptala. The main body delicately in five claws imperial dragon soaring amidst flames and vapors, with face and upper right appendage outstretched toward the heavens. Vigorous dragons chasing flaming pearl amidst flames against cobalt blue scrolling clouds diaper. The backdrop depicts swirling wind, fire painted and interspersed with flower blooms, interlocking foliage atop a beautiful white underglaze. The neck adorned with upturning phoenix tail, flower blooms interspersed with scrolling tendril in famille jaune base color, and enclosed with thick gilt single line. The shoulder adorned with repeating key fret and auspicious pattern decorated in the garlic head bottle. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity, the Li-Shui wave pattern which is known to be the abode of dragons. There is not any overlap of the outlines, its well carved, clear, subtle, and distinct. The underside unglazed, revealed the pale-creme ground and dark grayish brown spotted firing marks and edge-cut foot rim. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous craftsman.
The upper rim bear a reign mark, a six underglaze script characters reign mark, Made in The Years of Wanli Reign Period of Great Ming Dynasty.
