Item Details
Description
Dimensions: 13-1/8" H x 8-1/4" Dia. (each)

Pair of Chinese Qing Dynasty Period dragon porcelain vases. Delicately potted in a slightly flattened globular body with round shoulder gently raise wide cylindrical tall neck toward the flaring rim, raised on slight round foot base. All reserved hand painted ornamentations are rendered in famille jaune - lemon yellow underglaze base color which contrast against the iron-red and blue fine color. The main body adorned with snarling huge imperial five claws dragon careening through cumulus clouds , vapor and flaming ruyi in a iron-red color dragon squama rounded the bowl to chasing flaming pearl amidst flames. The upper neck rim decorated with repeating taotie masks and key fret pattern, enclosed with thick gilt ring line. Dragon is the symbol of the Emperor, the Son of Heaven, eternity, Yang and Yin, male vigor and fecundity, the Li-Shui wave pattern which is known to be the abode of dragons. Pearls have been found in Chinese freshwater rivers from ancient times. The shiny translucent quality has long been associated with the moon. Legends consider pearls to originate from the moon which is sometimes known as night shining pearl. A pearl was once placed in the mouth of the deceased. Dragons are often shown chasing a pearl from the legend that the phases of the moon are due to a dragon eating it. In this case the pearl may represent wisdom. As the pearl lies hidden inside an unprepossessing dark shell of a mussel, it also symbolizes hidden beauty or talent. It is one of the eight jewels of Buddhism, in this form it may be surrounded with flames to denote its magical powers. The colors are harmonious, elegant and exquisite, the composition is sophisticated, simply a feast for the eye. The clay is very fine, with a brilliant glaze finish that was applied by a meticulous craftsman.

Mark on under base, a six underglaze blue script characters reign mark, enclosed with double fine rings, Yongzheng Reign Period of Great Qing Dynasty.
